Chapter 1

There was blackness all around me. I struggled against it, but it kept pulling me down. I blacked out again.

"Katara! Where are you going?" I heard a boy say.

"Aang, there's someone in the water!" A female voice said.

Water? How could I be in the water? But then I felt the water slap against my skin. I really was in the water.

"Aang! Katara! What are you- She's naked!" Another male voice said.

"Sokka!" The female voice said.

I willed myself awake. My eyes opened. I was in the middle of a wide river. I twisted my head and saw a girl and two boys in the water. The girl was closer to me. Her hair was brown and her eyes were a bright blue. I sat up and found that I could touch the bottom of the river.

I tried to get up and found that my legs were weak. The girl was almost to me. I stumbled my way as far as I could and collapsed in her arms.

"I've got you. You'll be okay." She said.

I closed my eyes and felt a cloth being wrapped around my body. Then I felt arms around my waist and my arms were placed on the girl’s shoulders. She helped me walk.

"Katara, what are we going to do with her?" One of the boys asked.

"I am going to heal her and clean her up. You two are going to help me." Katara said. She must be the one carrying me.

The boys said nothing. The water was beginning to get lower. We were almost to shore. That's when my feet hit land and my legs gave out. The girl was strong, but she wasn't strong enough.

"I'll take her." A boy said.

Suddenly, I was lifted into the boy’s arms. I could feel the water drip off my body. I tried to speak but nothing came out. I willed myself to open my eyes. They opened and I blinked against the sun. After a few seconds, I could see. The boy carrying me had the same dark hair and same bright blue eyes as Katara. He must be her brother.  He looked down and saw that I was awake.

"Hi there. My name is Sokka. What's yours?" He asked.

I tried to talk but only air came out. I weakly lifted my hand to my throat and shook my head.

"It's going to be alright. Katara will fix you up. She's an amazing water bender and she's my little sister." Sokka said.

I could see a tent up ahead. Katara ran in front of us and opened it up. Sokka brought me in and laid me on the ground. When he tried to leave, I grabbed his hand and managed a squeeze.

"N...n...No." I wheezed and then coughed.

"There's water in her lungs and she has a huge gash on her leg. Sokka bring me a big bowl of water. Aang bring me some towels." Katara said.

Sokka started to get up, but I shook my head.

"Maybe I remind her of someone she's close to. I better stay here." Sokka said.

Katara sighed and then turned to the other boy in the tent. He was bald and he had blue arrows on his head and arms. He must have been Aang. He had beautiful brown eyes. Ones that you expect a puppy to have.

"Aang, will you get the supplies for me?" She asked.

"Sokka, I'm going to heal her first. After I'm done healing her, I'll begin to clean her up. If you have to look anywhere on her, look at her face. If you even start to look down, I'll slap you." Katara said.

"Alright! I get it!" Sokka said and looked intently at me.

"I wonder what happened to her." He said absent-minded.

Aang returned then and Katara began to work on me. I didn't pay attention to anything. I looked at Sokka and we both explored each others faces and eyes. Aang was kicked out of the tent once Katara began to clean me up. And she made Sokka turn around when she was getting me dressed. I fit perfectly into her clothes.

"There. You're all better now. I'll get you some food and water and then you can tell us what happened to you." Katara said and then walked out of the tent.

My head was resting in Sokka's lap while he watched me. I rolled over so that I was facing towards the ceiling and towards Sokka's face.

"S..Sa..Sokka." I said and touched his cheek.

"Yeah, that's me. What is your name?" Sokka asked.

"Na...name? No... name." I said.

Just then Katara came back into the tent. She helped me sit up and helped me eat and drink because my arms were too weak. While Katara was helping me eat, Sokka talked to her.

"She said my name and I asked her for hers. She said that she didn't have a name. I don't think she has any memory of who she is." Sokka said.

"We'll find out after she gets some sleep." Katara said.

Katara cleaned up my plates and helped me finish my water. Then she walked out of the tent. Sokka was sitting in the corner watching me. I laid down on the pillow and turned to face him. I waited a few minutes before Katara came back in.

"It's about time that she gets some sleep. Come on Sokka." She said and grabbed his hand.

"Please don't leave." I said.

"Which one of us do you want to stay?" Katara asked.

"Both." I answered.

Katara gave a smiled and Sokka looked a little bit surprised. They both took one side and laid down next to me. I took their hands and held them close to my sides. I could feel Katara straighten out my hair and patting it flat in places. Sokka had moved our intertwined hands over his heart and I could feel his heartbeat and breathing slow. He was sleeping. I closed my eyes and slept for what seemed like weeks.

When I woke up the next morning, a flying lemur was on my chest and I didn't feel Katara's or Sokka's hands. The lemur came up to my face and made a sound. I sat up and screamed. It was a good scream, but I was still hoarse from the water overload. Sokka came running in with a sword in his hand.

"Who's there? Momo? Get out of here!" Sokka said.

Momo growled and then glided out of the tent. Sokka put his sword away and sat down.

"Sorry about that. That's one of Aang's pets. His name is Momo. He's a flying lemur." Sokka said

"Water?" I asked.

"Sure, hold on." Sokka said and exited the tent.

After a minute, he returned with a glass of water. I gulped it down and then set it on the floor.

"Thank you." I said.

"No problem...I have to call you something. Are you sure you don't remember you're name?" Sokka asked.

"My memories started when you guys pulled me out of the water. I don't remember how I got there and I don't remember anything about myself."

"I've got it! Since we pulled you out of a river, I'll call you River!"

"Okay. I guess it makes sense." "You are now officially River. Welcome to Team Avatar!
